Cheryl grew up in a small, rural town in the 1960's. Her parents were medical professionals, serving the community, and instilling the values of honesty, hard work, self-sufficiency and caring for others. These are the same values she has stressed with her own children and grandchildren. And these are the values that continue to lead her to appreciate the importance of serving the public, to ensure that all Utahns have access to high quality and affordable education, healthcare, and housing.
Cheryl graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and Business Economics from Claremont McKenna College. She retired in 2016 after working 34 years, as a successful senior manager for a major international enery company. She is a recognized expert in risk decision making, major incident investigation, and oil/gas process safety. She has been a featured speaker at industry conferences around the world and has published papers in multiple technical journals. For the last 15 years of her career, Cheryl lived and worked overseas in Nigeria, Venezuela, and Kazakhstan - learning the languages and cultures along the way.
For 50 years, Cheryl has been putting her skills and experience to work in every community where she has lived. She has coached kids soccer teams, tutored and mentored students, started new 4H clubs, and served on the school board. Cheryl currently serves on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity for Summit & Wasatch Counties, teaches ESL to recent immigrants, volunteers with the League of Women Voters, and spends time encouraging young people to pursue careers in STEM through the Society of Women Engineers. Cheryl is also serving as the Community Services Director for the Park City Sunrise Rotary club and was recently named to lead the COVID-19 response team for Utah's Rotary District. Cheryl is also the Director of the Talem Foundation which funds sustainable development projects in developing countries around the world. She loves to hike with her Sheepadoodle, and sew quilts for the grandkids.
Hi, I'm Cheryl Butler and I'm running to represent you in the Utah House of Representatives, District 53. I live in Summit County with my husband Raymond, and our two adorable dogs, Lucy & Barney. I'm retired, after working >30 years as an engineer and senior manager with Chevron. For 20 of those years, I was a working mom. Thankfully, our five kids are all grown now and have flown the nest. Since retirement, I've put my experience to work by serving the community on the Boards of multiple civic organizations.
I'm running for office because I truly believe that we all have a duty to serve the public when we can. In these uncertain times, experience really matters. I'd like to put mine to use for District 53. Join me, and let's bring a new voice to UT State House - YOURS!
